Counselor Corner

Hello, 


I'm Brandi Urban, Enge-Washinton Intermediate School Counselor.  I'm excited to be working with the 3rd-6th graders and am happy you are here to view the different services and programs we have.  
 

The counseling program at EWIS is designed to be preventative and developmental.  I help students develop skills to deal with problems and learn to deal with changes in life.  I also help students learn new skills to use to make the most of their educational opportunities and empower them in their own learning and making positive choices in their lives.  
 

In this webpage you will find information about classroom lessons, small groups, family resources and other information related to your student's school counseling program and what it provides.

EWIS COUNSELING PROGRAM:

Below are brief descriptions of the activities and program at EWIS:

Character Education- Character Counts!

The CHARACTER COUNTS! approach to character education is based on six ethical values.  During the school year at EWIS, we will focus on a different pillar each six weeks. Students will view a video, hear morning announcements, and be provided character lessons in the classroom that focuses on the pillar for that six weeks. The first day of each week, students and staff will be asked to wear the specific Character Counts! Pillar color.  At the end of each six-week period, each teacher will nominate one boy and one girl who exhibit the highlighted character trait and will be honored with a Character Counts! award.  These students will also be recognized on the Character Counts! bulletin board. 

 

1st Six-Weeks- Trustworthiness (Blue)
Be honest • Don’t deceive, cheat or steal • Be reliable — do what you say you’ll do • Have the courage to do the right thing • Build a good reputation • Be loyal — stand by your family, friends and country

2nd Six-Weeks- Respect (Yellow)
Treat others with respect; follow the Golden Rule • Be tolerant of differences • Use good manners, not bad language • Be considerate of the feelings of others • Don’t threaten, hit or hurt anyone • Deal peacefully with anger, insults and disagreements

3rd Six-Weeks- Responsibility (Green)
Do what you are supposed to do • Persevere: keep on trying! • Always do your best • Use self-control • Be self-disciplined • Think before you act — consider the consequences • Be accountable for your choices

4th Six- weeks- Fairness (Orange)
Play by the rules • Take turns and share • Be open-minded; listen to others • Don’t take advantage of others • Don’t blame others carelessly

5th Six- Weeks- Caring (Red)
Be kind • Be compassionate and show you care • Express gratitude • Forgive others • Help people in need

6th Six-Weeks- Citizenship (Purple)
Do your share to make your school and community better • Cooperate • Get involved in community affairs • Stay informed; vote • Be a good neighbor • Obey laws and rules • Respect authority • Protect the environment

 

Goat P.R.I.D.E. Awards

Students are recognized for exhibiting positive behaviors on campus.  Students receive tickets from teachers and campus staff to be entered in a drawing for reward items, and are recognized for the positive behavior choices they have made.  

 

Conflict Resolution Skills

Students are provided with and have modeled to them strategies to use when they are in a conflict.  Teachers and staff help student process through their problem and implement a strategy to work toward a solution.  These skills empower students to solve their own problems and help them to learn how to deal with bullying and other struggles in life.  

 

My PALS

MY PALS is a mentoring program for the students of Enge-Washington.  The goal of the program is to monitor and provide positive role models for students who are missing one or more of the elements of social, emotional or academic etiquette that enable them to be successful and productive members of the community in which they live.  Students who are referred to this program may come from a strong family background with parents or a teacher who request additional assistance in the student’s emotional and/or social development. They could otherwise be a student that comes from a family that is missing one or both parents or who needs extra support academically or emotionally.

 

Career Cafe'

All students will participate in career guidance and exploration.  Information about future career choices and resources available in the library and online will be presented.   In 6th grade, students will take a career interest inventory, based on 16 career clusters, and students have the opportunity to participate in a Career Cafe' presentation during lunch.  These presentations bring in professionals from the community to present information about their career and answer questions students may have regarding their position.

 

Guidance lessons 

Lessons are skill based and are presented in a classroom setting or a whole school setting using our broadcast network.  Lessons can also be customized to meet the needs of individual classrooms or grade levels.  Areas include, but are not limited to,- test anxiety, self-control,  conflict resolution, dealing with life changes and frustrations, goal setting, friendship, gossip, bullying, and  the choice/consequence connection.

 

Group/Individual Counseling

Sessions are person-centered and solution focused to help students participate fully in their educational opportunities.  Example areas include:  anger management, self-control, grief, social skills/friendship, and changing families. (Sessions are non-therapeutic in nature. Referrals are provided for private therapy services as needed and requested.)

 

Parent Programs and Volunteer Opportunities

Different opportunities will be available for parents to participate in through out the school year.  These programs are designed to allow parents to develop supports and relationships with the school and other parents in the community.  Volunteer opportunities will be offered with the completion of the volunteer form and application.  Parents can come and help with special programs on the campus including Red Ribbon Week and other service projects.
